Functional Acupuncture at Kanata Chiropractor

When pain is persistent, finding relief that lasts is important. Relief that is natural and holistic is even more important. OTC and prescription medications can have unwanted side effects. You want a solution that doesn’t create more problems.

Functional acupuncture focuses on muscles and surrounding tissues, providing much-needed pain relief.

What Is Functional Acupuncture?

This therapeutic modality involves the insertion of extremely fine needles into the affected area of soft tissue under the skin. The technique is an adaptation of the traditional Chinese method, using current knowledge from anatomy, physiology, and pathology, in addition to the principles of evidence-based practice.

At Kanata Chiropractor, we use it for various musculoskeletal conditions, including myofascial trigger point pain, osteoarthritic discomfort, neck and back pain, and tension headaches. This method of care has been used to reduce painful knots and muscle spasms related to sports injuries. It has also been shown to be effective for postoperative pain management and scar tissue dysfunction. With virtually no side effects, it’s a useful therapy to help reduce pain and stimulate faster healing.

How Does It Help?

The fine needles activate the local nerve endings to release various neuropeptides, which increases local blood flow and improves healing rates. Acupuncture can directly deactivate myofascial trigger points to reduce muscle tension, and stimulate mechanoreceptors to block the transmission of pain signals. It also promotes the release of endorphins and serotonin in the brain and spinal cord, leading to pain inhibition.

The Process

Dr. Ling uses single-use stainless steel needles to safely insert through the skin into the affected soft tissues. Once they reach the target area, they stay in that position for 10-15 minutes, with or without manipulation or electricity.

When done, all needles are removed and safely disposed of. If needed, gentle soft tissue therapy or mobilizations will be applied for our patients’ comfort. We commonly recommend a care plan of six to eight sessions to achieve our goal of pain reduction & improved function.
